The most striking and original structures in Key West are not the public buildings, as in so many parts of the world, but the spacious, well-proportioned houses that were constructed here in the 19 th century, mostly by ship's carpenters. About 300 of these houses are still standing today, concentrated in twenty blocks of the Old Town.
