You are not long on the island before you see the Conch Train. For many tourists this is the only exposure to the charms and diversity of Key West. The ride's a bit like riding the tram at Disney World with open air cars with canopy tops, pulled by a jeep cutely camouflaged as a train engine (on the theme of the famous Overseas Railway). The driver/guide delivers a standardized informal "lecture" on local architecture, history and more. Be sure to take along the map from the centerfold of Southern Exposure Guide so you can mark places you will want to return to see in more detail later.
